NEW PUBLICATION: DEMOGRAPHIC REPORT, 2004
The Statistical Service announces that the Demographic Report for 2004 is available. The report gives, inter alia, an account of population developments and provides data on a time series basis on fertility, mortality, marriages and divorces.
2. The most salient demographic developments during 2004 can be summarized as follows:
The population in the Government controlled area is estimated at 749.200 at the end of 2004 compared to 730.400 in the previous year, recording an increase of 2,6%. The population increase in 2004 is mainly explained by an increased net migration balance (15.724 persons) and to a lesser extent by the natural increase (3.084 persons).
In 2004 the number of births in the Government controlled area of Cyprus increased to 8.309 compared to 8.088 in 2003. The total fertility rate, which gives the mean number of children per woman decreased marginally to 1,49 in 2004 from 1,50 in 2003. The total fertility rate has, since 1996, remained below the replacement level of 2,10.
The number of deaths reached 5.225 in 2004 compared to 5.200 in 2003. The infant mortality rate is estimated at 3,5 infant deaths per thousand live births. The expectation of life at birth is estimated at 77,0 years for males and 81,4 for females for the period 2002/03.
Marriages and Divorces
In 2004 the number of marriages increased to 10.931 from 10.810 in 2003. Ecclesiastical marriages in 2004, which was a leap year, decreased from 3.898 in 2003 to 3.359 in 2004, and civil marriages increased from 6.912 in 2003 to 7.572 in 2004. Out of 7.572 civil marriages celebrated in 2004 only 1.990 were civil marriages of residents of Cyprus and only 187 concerned marriages between Cypriots. In 2004 the number of divorces increased to 1.614 from 1.472 in 2003.
In 2004 the net migration balance was positive, estimated at 15.724 people compared to 12.342 in 2003. The number of immigrants (Cypriot and foreigners arriving for settlement or for temporary employment for more than one year) was 22.003 in 2004 and the number of emigrants form Cyprus was 6.279.
