New Publication: Demographic Report, 2014
The Statistical Service announces that it has published the “Demographic Report 2014”. The report gives, inter alia, an account of population developments and provides data on a time series basis on fertility, mortality, marriages, divorces and migration.
The most salient demographic developments during 2014 can be summarized as follows:
(a) The population in the Government controlled area is estimated at 847,0 thousand at the end of 2014 compared to 858,0 thousand in the previous year, recording a decrease of 1,3%.
(b) In 2014 the number of births totaled 9.258 compared to 9.341 in 2013. The total fertility rate, which gives the mean number of children per woman was estimated at 1,31 in 2014 and has, since 1995, remained below the replacement level of 2,10.
(c) The number of deaths reached 5.250 in 2014 and the crude death rate 6,2 deaths per thousand population.
(d) The expectation of life at birth is estimated at 80,7 years for males and 84,5 for females.
(e) In 2014 the number of marriages decreased to 12.404 from 12.683 in 2013. Ecclesiastical marriages increased from 3.652 in 2013, to 3.706 in 2014, and civil marriages decreased from 9.031 in 2013 to 8.698 in 2014.
(f) In 2014 the number of divorces reached 1.884 from 1.857 in 2013.
(g) Net migration in Cyprus has been positive from 1983 to 2011. As from 2012, net migration has been negative, starting from -629 in 2012 and reaching -15.000 in 2014.
The Demographic Report can be downloaded free of charge from the website of the Statistical Service. The paper publication will later be available for sale at the Government Printing Office in Lefkosia at the price of €10,00 per copy.
