New Electronic Publication: Criminal Statistics, 2015

The Statistical Service announces that it has published the report “Criminal Statistics” for the year 2015, which presents data on crime for the period in question, based on information provided by the Police, the Courts and the Prison.

The most salient developments during 2015 can be summarized as follows:

(a) The number of serious offences reported to the Police (true cases) in 2015 was 5.915 compared to 6.833 in 2014. The offences against property constituted the largest group of offences, accounting for 54,7% of serious offences, followed by offences injurious to the public in general, accounting for 16,1% of the total. The number of cases concerning drug offences decreased by 12,5% in 2015 compared to the previous year. The number of drug cases recorded in 2015 was 947 compared to 1.082 in 2014.

(b) The number of offenders (natural persons) involved in the commission of serious offences reached 4.859 in 2015, compared to 4.359 in 2014. In 2015, the female offenders represented only 10,9% of the total number of offenders, while the offenders who were foreign citizens constituted 22,3% of the total. The corresponding figures recorded for women and foreigners in 2014 were 11,0% and 20,8%.

(c) The number of juvenile offenders who were involved in the commission of both serious and minor offences reached 151 in 2015, of which 20 were girls, compared to 216 juveniles (of which 24 girls) in 2014.

(d) According to the Judicial Statistics, 96.039 persons appeared before the courts in 2015 (77.713 males and 18.326 females), compared to 125.843 in 2014. Of these, 54.095 were convicted during 2015, compared to 68.708 in 2014.

(e) Regarding Prison Statistics, there were 946 admissions of convicted persons (825 males and 121 females) in 2015, compared to 1.141 in 2014. In addition to the convicted prisoners, 980 accused persons (prisoners pending trial) were admitted into prison in 2015, compared to 1.115 in 2014.
