New Publication: Demographic Report, 2013
The Statistical Service announces that it has published the “Demographic Report 2013”. The report gives, inter alia, an account of population developments and provides data on a time series basis on fertility, mortality, marriages, divorces and migration.
The most salient demographic developments during 2013 can be summarized as follows:
(a) The population in the Government controlled area is estimated at 858,0 thousand at the end of 2013 compared to 865,9 thousand in the previous year, recording a decrease of 0,9%.
(b) In 2013 the number of births totaled 9.341 compared to 10.161 in 2012. The total fertility rate, which gives the mean number of children per woman was estimated at 1,30 in 2013 and has, since 1995, remained below the replacement level of 2,10.
(c) The number of deaths reached 5.141 in 2013 and the crude death rate 6,0 deaths per thousand population.
(d) The expectation of life at birth is estimated at 80,0 years for males and 84,8 for females.
(e) In 2013 the number of marriages decreased to 12.683 from 12.918 in 2012. Ecclesiastical marriages decreased from 3.705 in 2012, to 3.652 in 2013, and civil marriages also decreased from 9.213 in 2012 to 9.031 in 2013.
(f) In 2013 the number of divorces reached 1.857 from 2.036 in 2012.
The Demographic Report can be downloaded free of charge from the website of the Statistical Service. The paper publication will later be available for sale at the Government Printing Office in Lefkosia at the price of €10,00 per copy.
