New Publication: Demographic Report, 2015
The Statistical Service announces that it has published the “Demographic Report 2015”. The report gives, inter alia, an account of population developments and provides data on a time series basis on fertility, mortality, marriages, divorces and migration.
The most salient demographic developments during 2015 can be summarized as follows:
(a) The population in the Government controlled area is estimated at 848,3 thousand at the end of 2015 compared to 847,0 thousand in the previous year, recording an increase of 0,2%.
(b) In 2015 the number of births totaled 9.170 compared to 9.258 in 2014. The total fertility rate, which gives the mean number of children per woman was estimated at 1,32 in 2015 and has, since 1995, remained below the replacement level of 2,10.
(c) The number of deaths reached 5.859 in 2015 and the crude death rate 6,9 deaths per thousand population.
(d) The expectation of life at birth is estimated at 79,8 years for males and 83,5 for females.
(e) In 2015 the number of marriages increased to 13.006 from 12.404 in 2014. Ecclesiastical marriages increased from 3.706 in 2014, to 4.175 in 2015, and civil marriages increased from 8.698 in 2014 to 8.831 in 2015.
(f) In 2015 the number of divorces reached 1.807 from 1.884 in 2014.
(g) Net migration in Cyprus has been positive from 1983 to 2011. As from 2012, net migration has been negative. In 2015, net migration was estimated at -2.000.
The Demographic Report can be downloaded free of charge from the website of the Statistical Service. The paper publication will soon be available for sale at the Government Printing Office in Lefkosia at the price of €6,50 per copy.
