The operation of the Government Internet Node (GIN) has started in June 2001 and provides Internet, Extranet and Intranet services to all Government Organisations, Civil Servants, as well as to the citizens/businesses, via the Government Web Sites and various Internet applications. The services provided by the GIN are:
- Internet browsing.
- Electronic Mail.
- File Transfer (FTP).
- Web Sites Hosting.
- Interconnection of Internet applications.
- Connection with private networks of the European Union.
- Interconnection of Government Information Systems with E.U Information Systems.
- Encryption/Decryption (Virtual Private Networks).
- LDAP/x.500 Directory Services.
- Domain Names - DITS is responsible for the assignment, registration and administration of all Governmental Internet Names (Domain Names) at the level ".GOV.CY", while the University of Cyprus is responsible for the highest level ".CY".
The Government Internet Node comprises of 25 central servers and is designed for high security, availability and redundancy.
The GIN supports PSTN and ISDN dialup connections, GDN connections, as well as connections via Internet. All connections are "protected" with encryption (VPN), ensuring thus, the security of the node and the users’ information.
