LATEST FIGURES: QUARTERLY ACCOUNTS OF GENERAL GOVERNMENT, 1st QUARTER 2006

(a) On the basis of the data on the General Government accounts for the period January - March 2006, compiled in accordance to E.U concepts and definitions, the total revenue amounted to £755,2 mn (8,9% decrease in relation to the first quarter of 2005) while total expenditure reached £770,8 mn (7,8% increase) i.e. there was a deficit of £15,6 mn (0,2% of GDP) compared to a surplus of £113,8mn during the first quarter of 2005.

(b) The main categories of revenue for the period January - March 2006 were: taxes on production and imports £336,7 mn (9,5% increase), of which VAT was £210,0 mn (15,5% increase), taxes on income and wealth £187,7 mn (3,6% decrease), social contributions £137,1 mn (no change).

The main categories of expenditure for the first three months of 2006 were: compensation of employees £279,8 mn (5,8% increase), and social transfers £209,6 mn (8,2% increase).
