SURVEY RESULTS: ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION EXPENDITURES IN INDUSTRIAL ENTERPRISES, 2002

On the basis of the results of a survey carried out by the Statistical Service, the total expenditure for Environmental Protection Activities (EPA) in industry in 2002 is estimated at £19,4 mn which corresponds to 0,31% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), compared to £10,9 mn or 0,19% of the GDP in 2001. Significant part of the increase from 2001 to 2002 is attributed to the increased investment expenditure in the cement industry.

By sector of performance, the expenditure was undertaken by: manufacturing industries £17,8 mn or 91,6% of the total, mining and quarrying industries £1,2 mn or 6,0% and electricity and water enterprises £0,4 mn or 2,4%. In the manufacturing sector, where the largest amount of expenditure is reported, manufacturing of other non-metallic minerals accounts for £8,8 mn, manufacturing of refined petroleum products for £3,2 mn and manufacturing of food and beverages for £2,2 mn.

By environmental domain, expenditure related to: the reduction of air emissions £9,0 mn, the monitoring, treatment and disposal of waste £3,3 mn, the treatment of wastewater £3,0 mn, the abatement of noise and vibration £1,1 mn and the protection of soil and groundwater and the protection of natural resources £3,0 mn.
