New Publication: Criminal Statistics, 2009

The Statistical Service announces that it has published the Annual Report “Criminal Statistics” for the year 2009. The Report presents data on crime, based on information provided by the Police, the Courts and the Prison. It also presents comparative data for the period 1976-2009.

The most salient developments during 2009 can be summarized as follows:

(a) The number of serious offences reported to the Police (true cases) in 2009 was 7.104 compared to 7.341 in 2008. The offences against property constitute the largest group of offences, accounting for 58,6% of serious offences, followed by offences relating to forgery, coining and criminal impersonation with 11,9%. The number of cases concerning drug offences decreased by 9,6% compared to the previous year. The number of cases recorded in 2009 was 705 compared to 780 in 2008.

(b) The number of adult offenders convicted of serious offences was 1.723, compared to 1.607 the year before. Their median age was 27,0 years for males and 32,0 for females. The women represented only 8,9% of adult convicted offenders, while the convictions of foreigners constituted 46,0% of the total convictions for serious offences (44,0% of males and 65,6% of females).

(c) The number of juvenile offenders who are involved in the commission of both serious and minor offences reached 281 in 2009 (of which 25 were girls) compared to 341 in 2008.

(d) According to the Judicial Statistics, 102.179 persons appeared before the courts in 2009, compared to 103.829 in 2008. Of these, 62.466 were convicted, compared to 63.775 the year before.

(e) Regarding Prison Statistics, there were 1.432 admissions of convicted persons (1.300 males and 132 females) in 2009, compared to 1.255 in 2008. In addition to the convicted prisoners, 1.372 accused persons (pending trial) were admitted into prison.
