Latest Figures: Quarterly Accounts of General Government, 4th Quarter 2009

Based on the preliminary data on the General Government accounts for the period October-December 2009, compiled in accordance to E.U concepts and definitions, the total revenue amounted to €1772, 0 mn (15% decrease compared to the corresponding period of 2008). Total expenditure reached €2346, 1 mn, (2, 8% decrease) resulting to a deficit of €574,1 mn as compared to €325,9 mn deficit in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The main categories of revenue for the period October-December 2009 were: taxes on production and imports €534,0 mn (29.7% decrease), of which VAT was €387,0 mn (22,7% decrease), taxes on income and wealth €530,5 mn (20,4% decrease). Revenue from sales of goods and services decreased by 31,4% as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

The main categories of expenditure for the period October-December 2009 were: compensation of employees €803,5 mn (12,4% increase), and social transfers €689,5 mn (9,2% increase),current transfers reached €49,3 mn (81,3% decrease). Positive growth rates were observed in the category, of capital formation (38% increase). Intermediate consumption decreased by7%.

In 2009, the overall public sector balance registered a deficit of €1028,7 mn, 6,1% of GDP.

Total public sector expenditure in 2009 increased by 5,5% as compared to the previous year, while, total revenues decreased by 10,2%.
