NEW PUBLICATION: FOREIGN TRADE STATISTICS (SUMMARISED DATA), JAN 2004

1. The Statistical Service of Cyprus announces that it has published the monthly report “Foreign Trade Statistics (Summarised Data)” for January 2004 which is available from the Printing Office of the Republic of Cyprus in Nicosia at the price of C£2=.

The report provides data for the direction of trade, analysis of trade by H.S. Commodity Section, total imports and imports for home consumption by economic destination and area, total imports and imports for home consumption by broad economic sector and by area and analysis of domestic exports by broad economic sector and by area.

2. The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade in January 2004 were:

(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) in January 2004 increased to £180,1 mn compared to £170,5 mn in January 2003. Total exports decreased to £29,0 mn in January 2004 compared to £31,7 mn in January 2003. The trade deficit increased by 9% to £151,0 mn in January 2004 compared to £138,7 mn in the corresponding period of 2003.

(b) Imports for home consumption in January 2004 increased to £159,5 mn from £144,7 mn in January 2003. Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption valued at £52,9 mn or 33,2%, followed by consumer goods with £39,2 mn or 24,6%, fuels and lubricants with £26,6 mn or 16,7%, capital goods with £21,5 mn or 13,5%, and transport equipment with £19,3 mn or 12,1%.

(c) Domestic exports, excluding stores and provisions, decreased to £13,6 mn in January 2004 from £15,0 mn in January 2003 and re-exports, excluding stores and provisions, to £13,3 mn in January 2004 compared to £14,5 mn in January 2003. Industrial products of domestic produce exported in January 2004 accounted for £9,9 mn or 72,5% while exports of raw agricultural products valued at £3,6 mn or 26,8%.

(d) During January 2004 the EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at £91,6 mn or 50,9% and absorbed goods valued at £7,3 mn or 53,8% of Cyprus domestic exports.
