LATEST FIGURES: FOREIGN TRADE, MAR 2003
1. The Statistical Service of Cyprus announces that it has just published the monthly report “Foreign Trade Statistics (Summarised Data)” for the period January-March, 2003 which is available from the Printing Office of the Republic of Cyprus in Nicosia at the price of C£2=.
The report provides data for the direction of trade, analysis of trade by H.S. Commodity Section, total imports and imports for home consumption by economic destination and area, total imports and imports for home consumption by broad economic sector and by area and analysis of domestic exports by broad economic sector and by area.
2. The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during the period January-March 2003 were:
(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) were £535,5 mn as compared with £588,4 mn in January-March 2002. Total exports amounted to £113,0 mn compared to £124,4 mn during January-March 2002. The trade deficit accounted for £422,5 mn compared to £464,0 mn in the corresponding period of 2002.
(b) Imports for home consumption totalled £477,3 mn compared to £525,5 mn in January-March 2002. Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption in January-March 2003 valued at £163,2 mn or 34,2%, followed by consumer goods with £136,2 mn or 28,5%, transport equipment with £61,0 mn or 12,8%, capital goods with £55,9 mn or 11,7% and fuels and lubricants with £39,0 mn or 8,2%.
(c) Domestic exports, including stores and provisions valued at £51,9 mn as compared with £58,9 mn in January-March 2002 and re-exports, including stores and provisions to £61,1 mn compared to £65,5 mn in the corresponding period of 2002. Industrial products of domestic produce exported in January-March 2003 accounted for £37,4 mn or 75,5% while exports of raw agricultural products valued at £11,3 mn or 22,8%.
(d) During the period January-March 2003 the EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at £298,5 mn or 55,7% and absorbed goods valued at £29,1 mn or 58,7% of Cyprus domestic exports, excluding stores and provisions.
