Latest Figures: Generation and Treatment of Municipal Solid Waste, 2013
The Statistical Service estimates that the total amount of municipal solid waste generated in Cyprus in 2013 stood at 538 thousand tonnes compared to 579 thousand tonnes in 2012, recording a decrease of 7%. From the total amount generated in 2013, 79% was disposed in landfills, 9% was collected for composting and the remaining 12% is estimated to have been collected for recycling.
During 2012 (data for 2013 are not yet available), the amount of municipal solid waste generated per inhabitant in the European Union was 487 kg. In Cyprus, the per capita generation of municipal solid waste in 2012 reached 670 kg and is the highest among the member states of the EU. At similarly high levels as Cyprus are Denmark (668 kg), Luxembourg (662 kg) and Germany (611 kg). It is worth noting that in 2013 this quantity for Cyprus is estimated to have decreased to 624 kg per person.
