The Statistical Service announces that it has published the first report “Social Protection in Cyprus 2000 – 2003”.

The report is based on a survey in compliance with the european system and provides detailed data on the classification of Social Protection by functions, grouping of Social Protection schemes, types of receipts and expenditure, classification of institutional sectors from which receipts originate in Cyprus and also comparisons within the EU.

The Social Protection expenditure in Cyprus increased to 18,6% on GDP in 2003, compared to 15,8% in 2000. In the European Union, social protection expenditure was 27,4% on average in 2002.

The benefits for old age and sickness in Cyprus, which were the largest for the year 2003 comprised 45% and 26% respectively, of the total benefits.

The overwhelming majority of the benefits originated from public sources. Specifically, for the year 2003, the public sources were 80.2% of the total Social Protection benefits.
