LATEST FIGURES: FOREIGN TRADE, SEP 2002

The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during the period January-September 2002 were:

(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) were £1.852,0 mn as compared with £1.913,5 mn in January-September 2001. Total exports amounted to £393,5 mn compared to £477,8 mn during January-September 2001. The trade deficit accounted for £1.458,4 mn compared to £1.435,7 mn in the corresponding period of 2001.

(b) Imports for home consumption totalled £1.682,9 mn compared to £1.640,6 mn in January-September 2001. Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption in January-September 2002 valued at £531,9 mn or 31,6%, followed by consumer goods with £475,7 mn or 28,3%, transport equipment with £220,1 mn or 13,1%, capital goods with £179,8 mn or 10,7% and fuels and lubricants with £175,6 mn or 10,4%.

(c) Domestic exports, including stores and provisions valued at £180,4 mn as compared with £190,4 mn in January-September 2001 and re-exports, including stores and provisions to £213,2 mn compared to £287,4 mn in the corresponding period of 2001. Industrial products of domestic produce exported in January-September 2002 accounted for £138,3 mn or 79,9% while exports of raw agricultural products valued at £32,5 mn or 18,8%.

(d) During the period January-September 2002 the EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at £970,8 mn or 52,4% and absorbed goods valued at £94,0 mn or 54,4% of Cyprus domestic exports, excluding stores and provisions.
