In 2005, the social protection expenditure amounted to £1.407,4 million compared to £1.296,3 million in 2004, i.e. an increase of almost 9%. For the year 2005, the Social Protection expenditure as a percentage of GDP was 17,9%. In the European Union (EU 27) the corresponding percentage was on average 27,3%, in 2005.
