The Statistical Service of Cyprus announces that it has published the monthly report “Foreign Trade Statistics (Summarised Data)” for the period January-March 2004.

2. The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade in the first quarter of 2004 were:

(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) in January-March 2004 increased to £578,0 mn compared to £535,5 mn in January-March 2003. Total exports decreased to £112,0 mn in January-March 2004 compared to £113,0 mn in January-March 2003. The trade deficit increased by 10,3% to £466,0 mn in January-March 2004 compared to £422,5 mn in the corresponding period of 2003.

(b) Imports for home consumption increased to £518,2 mn from £477,3 mn in the first quarter of 2003. Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption valued at £182,9 mn or 35,3%, followed by consumer goods with £154,6 mn or 29,8%, capital goods with £67,8 mn or 13,1%, transport equipment with £63,2 mn or 12,2% and fuels and lubricants with £46,4 mn or 9,0%.

(c) Domestic exports, excluding stores and provisions, increased to £51,8 mn in January-March 2004 from £49,5 mn in the period of January-March 2003 and re-exports, excluding stores and provisions, remain at the January-March 2003 level with £53,6 mn. Industrial products of domestic produce exported accounted for £36,7 mn or 70,9% while exports of raw agricultural products valued at £14,5 mn or 28,0%.

(d) During the first quarter of 2004 the EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at £326,4 mn or 56,5% and absorbed goods valued at £25,4 mn or 49,0% of Cyprus domestic exports.
