New Publication: Statistics of Education, 2010/2011
The Statistical Service announces that it has published the annual report "Statistics of Education" for the school year 2010/11. The report provides detailed information regarding the number of educational institutions, pupils/students, teaching and non-teaching personnel and expenditure, at each level of education, as well as Cypriot students abroad.
The main data included in the report are:
(a) At all levels of education, there were 1.268 educational institutions, 178.853 pupils/students and 16.545 teachers, giving a pupil/teacher ratio of 10,8.
(b) Of the total number of pupils/students, 69,5% were enrolled in public schools and 30,5% in private schools.
(c) The enrolments of pupils/students by level of education were as follows: Pre-school and Pre-primary 25.582, Primary 54.083, Secondary 63.764, Tertiary 32.118 and Special education 306.
(d) Cypriot students abroad totaled 19.199. Τheir distribution by level of education was as follows: Tertiary non-university 140 or 0,8%, Tertiary University Undergraduate 16.575 or 86,3%, Tertiary Postgraduate (Master’s) 1.961 or 10,2% and Doctoral (Ph.D) 523 or 2,7%.
The main fields of study were: Business and Administration 12,7%, Health 11,8%, Engineering and engineering trades with 8,8%, Social and behavioral sciences with 8,6%, Architecture and building with 7,7%, Arts with 7,3%, Law with 7,1%, Humanities with 7,0%, and Teacher training and Education science with 6,2%.
The 97,5% of the students were studying in schools in countries of the European Union and the rest 2,5% in countries which are not included in the European Union.
(e) Public expenditure in public and private education for year 2010 stood at €1.390,9 millions, for all levels. The current public cost per pupil/student in public schools by level of education was as follows: Pre-school and Pre-primary €5.565, Primary €6.015, Secondary €9.519 and Tertiary €14.441.
The report is available free of charge in electronic form, on the website of the Statistical Service. The paper publication will later be available from the Government Printing Office at the price of €13.50 per copy.
