New Publication: Criminal Statistics, 2012-2014

The Statistical Service announces that it has published the report “Criminal Statistics” for the years 2012-2014 which presents data on crime for the period in question, based on information provided by the Police, the Courts and the Prison.

The most salient developments during 2012-2014 can be summarized as follows:

(a) The number of serious offences reported to the Police (true cases) in 2014 was 6.833 compared to 7.097 in 2013 and 7.987 in 2012. The offences against property constituted the largest group of offences, accounting for 56,0% of serious offences in 2014, followed by offences injurious to the public in general, accounting for 16,1% of the total. The number of cases concerning drug offences increased by 8,1% in 2014 compared to the previous year. The number of drug cases recorded in 2014 was 1.082 compared to 1.001 in 2013 and 1.032 in 2012.

(b) The number of offenders involved in the commission of serious offences reached 4.359 in 2014, compared to 4.440 in 2013 and 4.811 in 2012. In 2014, the female offenders represented only 11,0% of the total, while the offenders who were foreigner citizens constituted 20,8% of the total number of offenders. The corresponding figures recorded for women and foreigners in 2013 were 8,7% and 22,7%, while in 2012 they were 11,5% and 27,3%.

(c) The number of juvenile offenders who were involved in the commission of both serious and minor offences reached 216 in 2014, of which 24 were girls. The corresponding figures for 2013 were 282 and 40, while for 2012 they were 382 and 40.

(d) According to the Judicial Statistics, 125.843 persons appeared before the courts in 2014 (100.821 males and 25.022 females), compared to 104.344 in 2013 and 129.126 in 2012. Of these, 68.708 were convicted during 2014, compared to 60.819 in 2013 and 71.545 in 2012.

(e) Regarding Prison Statistics, there were 1.141 admissions of convicted persons (1.008 males and 133 females) in 2014, compared to 1.358 in 2013 and 1.491 in 2012. In addition to the convicted prisoners, 1.115 accused persons (pending trial) were admitted into prison in 2014, compared to 1.339 in 2013 and 1.662 in 2012.
