LATEST FIGURES: QUARTERLY ACCOUNTS OF GENERAL GOVERNMENT, 3rd QUARTER 2005

On the basis of the preliminary data on the General Government accounts for the period July -September 2005, compiled in accordance to E.U concepts and definitions, the total revenue amounted to £803,8mn (20,9% increase in relation to the third quarter of 2004) while total expenditure reached £832,2mn (8,3% increase) i.e. there was a deficit of £28,4mn compared to a deficit of £103,4mn during the third quarter of 2004.

2. For the period January-September 2005 total revenue amounted to £2.297,3mn and total expenditure amounted to £2.288,6mn resulting to a surplus of £8,7mn (0,1% of GDP), compared to a deficit of £201,4mn (-2.8% of GDP) during the corresponding period (Jan.-Sept.) of 2004.

3. The main categories of revenue for the period Jan-September 2005 were: taxes on production and imports £952,9mn (11,6% increase), of which VAT was £560,2mn (increase 16,6%), taxes on income and wealth £515,7mn (22,7% increase), social contributions £429,6mn (2,7% increase).

4. The main categories of expenditure for the first nine months of 2005 were: compensation of employees £808,6mn (2,9% increase), and social transfers £643,3mn (10,4% increase).
