The statistics produced by CYSTAT concern all social and economic activities of the country. The sources of information are both the public and the private sector. Data from the private sector are collected mainly through surveys whereas from Government Departments and semi-Government organisations mostly through access to administrative records.
CYSTAT conducts censuses (complete enumerations), sample surveys and ad-hoc surveys. The data are collected mainly through personal interviews carried out by well trained permanent and casual staff. At the planning stage of the various surveys, CYSTAT takes into consideration requests and proposals from other Government Departments so that their needs in data are fulfilled.
Censuses are held for the population, agriculture and enterprises, while annual surveys are conducted in various fields. For the monitoring of short-term developments in the economy, a significant number of monthly data and indices is compiled, e.g. external trade, employment and unemployment, industrial production, producer’s prices, building permits, agricultural output, retail sales, consumer price index, tourism, registration of motor vehicle, transport and services.
According to the provisions of article 7 of the Statistics Law, No. 15(I) of 2000, the Statistical Service compiles an Annual Programme of Statistical Surveys and Activities, where for every survey/activity a general description is provided of its scope, methodology, legal framework and time schedule for its realisation, on the basis of the corresponding five-year programme of surveys and activities. In the framework of adopting best European practices, the Statistical Service assesses the implementation of its Programme of Statistical Surveys and Activities and prepares an annual evaluation report.
